In 2024, domestic violence remains a significant issue, with statistics indicating that roughly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience severe physical violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime, and over 10 million people experience domestic violence annually in the US.

Prevalence and Impact:

Lifetime Prevalence:

Nearly 1 in 4 adult women (24.3%) and approximately 1 in 7 adult men (13.8%) report having experienced severe physical violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime. 

About 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men experience some form of physical violence by a partner in their lifetime. 

Around 24 people per minute are victims of physical violence, rape, or stalking by an intimate partner in the U.S. 

Annual Impact:

Intimate partner violence affects more than 12 million people every year. More than 10 million men and women in the U.S. are subjected to domestic violence annually. 

 Rape and Sexual Violence:

Nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) have been raped in their lifetime. 

About 1 in 3 women and nearly 1 in 6 men experience some form of sexual violence during their lifetimes. 

Stalking:

One in 6 women and 1 in 19 men have experienced stalking during their lifetimes. 

An intimate partner stalks about 6 in 10 female victims and 4 in 10 male victims.

Homicide:

Data from U.S. crime reports suggest that about one in five homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner. 

Gender Disparities:

Over half of female homicide victims are killed by a current or former male intimate partner.

Domestic violence occurs at the same rates, or at higher rates, in LGBT relationships than in heterosexual couples.

27.7% of all US children are exposed to physical violence between parents by age 18 years.
